Get a Hobby Or Die

Identity politics is in vogue at the moment, there are hoards of people all over the world banding together to fight a common enemy, whether they’re on the fringes of the radical right or blissfully skipping around the left; both camps are extremely invested in their respective ideologies. I’ve got this theory that the reason why identity politics is so prevalent nowadays is that most of us lack purpose in our lives and in some respects the closest we can get to that is our jobs and politics. I’m sure you’ve been in the position where someone’s asked you what you do and you automatically reply with your occupation. The issue here is, what happens in 10-20 years when automation ramps up and entry level jobs are gobbled up by bots and AI, what will your answer be then? The book above – ‘Inventing The Future; Postcapitalism and a World Without Work’ – hopes to answer that very question and when I find out I’ll be sure to let you know. In the meantime get curious, learn a new language, brush on your cooking skills or simply volunteer your time for charity; but whatever you do don’t get caught sleeping on the wheel, the future is coming.

Print Ain’t Dead, You Are.

You’ll hear a lot of nonsense about print being dead from “well-informed” commentators, but I disagree print isn’t dead, the internet just caught up with the advertising side of things. 10-page ad spreads were rendered useless as soon as Google Adwords became a thing (thank God for that) but the creative self-indulgent minds behind some these newer titles are still alive and kicking. Plus who buys magazine’s for the ads anyway? I know I don’t. I love magazine’s as a form of contemporary Interior design, my dream is to collect every issue of i-D magazine before 2001 and have them stacked around my studio ready to be devoured when I’m short of inspiration. Support the magazines you love, don’t listen to the naysayers.

The Societal Woes of Human Genetics

I really enjoyed this interview with Sebastian Junger on The Joe Rogan Experience recently, he spoke really well about the lack of balance in modern day society, where personal gain is favoured over the wellbeing of the group. It’s an eye-opening perspective on the world we live in today and what we can learn from those who came before us. I’m currently listening to his to audiobook ‘Tribes’ now on Audible if you want to grab a copy as well as 30-day free trial click this link.

How to Deal with Disappointment

Kevin Hart has been everywhere lately promoting his autobiography ‘I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons’. I haven’t picked it up myself but from the sounds of it, it’s your quintessential ‘rags to riches’ story about the most high-paid comedians of all time. Out of all the interviews, he’s done so far my fav has been his appearance on the Jim and Sam Show. I got the impression he felt really at home speaking to long-time comedic friend Jim Norton and during the course of the conversation, he revealed how he was able to bounce back from an early disappointment in Hollywood. The story itself starts around 20:30 mark but if you’ve got some time try and watch the whole thing, there are loads of jewels in there you can apply to your life.
