R.I.P. Streetwear Boutiques

What’s happened to the much maligned and copied streetwear boutique/store?

There was a time when the adventurous and often risk prone buying approach of stores such as The Hideout and Union, were influencing retail stores worldwide. Dover Streetwear Market, although mainly based on the the idea of select stores from Tokyo, got a lot of its cues from the great work of Michael Koppleman & co.

Even though streetwear is a million (soon to be billion dollar) industry we’ve somehow lost the stores that were central to the community aspect of the scene. Along the way losing some of the notable personality that made it what it was. Now we’re left with cutting edge fashion stores that stock your favourite brand because its trendy. And that really hurts my soul.

I wish we had more stores.
